What is Facilities Management?

"Facilities management is the operation and management of non-core services to support a business in achieving the delivery of its core business objectives".

This has now become a complex exercise that includes managing a wide variety of services ranging from hard services (mechanical and electrical) to soft services (cleaning, security, catering). There is also a requirement to deliver the services to ensure best value for money. In addition there is need maximize the efficiency of the building assets through their working life, assisting with both life cycle replacement planning and their associated costs for prime mechanical and electrical plant.

With the advent of BIM (Building Information Modelling) being used in new building design, this will provide opportunities for future FM generations to model both fabric and services enhancements to improve energy consumption and contribute to more sustainable management and operation of building energy resources.
